Jain org convinced mayors that slaughterhouses be shut during festival starting today, but only state govt has the right to do so

Chicken tandoori: Non-vegetarians, eagerly awaiting the end of Shravan on September 10, may have to wait till the end of the month due to Paryushan
Non-vegetarians who are eagerly awaiting the end of Shravan on September 10 may have to wait till the end of the month.

That’s because Shubha Raul and mayors of three neighbouring townships have promised a Jain organisation that they won’t allow slaughterhouses to function during their festival of Paryushan.

From September 8 to 26, Jains will observe a fast, with some drinking only warm water the whole day.

The Jain Ekta Manch (JEM) got this assurance from the mayors of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli during a meeting at the the Mysore Association Auditorium at King’s Circle on September. The JEM is an organisation of 50 Jain sanghs.

However, surprisingly only the state government has the right to ban slaughterhouses.

No right

Thane Mayor Smita Indulkar said, “We will call for a meeting of our local corporators and tell them to implement our decision.”

However, she admitted that only the government has the right to do so. “How can I ban the slaughterhouses? But since I was invited by the Jain organisation, I told them I would get it done.”

Interestingly, city Mayor Shubha Raul, Manisha Bhoir (Navi Mumbai), Indulkar and Pundalik Mhatre (Kalyan-Dombivli) are hardcore non-vegetarians.

Good news

Mahendra Sanghoi, president of JEM is very happy with the decision. “The state government has already issued a notice to close legal slaughterhouses on September 8 and 15.

We have now managed to convince the mayors that killing of animals for eating is wrong and they have fully supported us.”

Mayors’ delight

- Shubha Raul loves eating chicken handi and fish dishes “very much”.

- Manisha Bhoir likes everything in chicken and fish. “But I love chicken leg very much.”

- Smita Indulkar is a pucca non-vegetarian. She loves fish fry and chicken handi.

- Pundalik Mhatre said, “I am a Maharashtrian. How can I live without non-vegetarian food? I like pork and can eat it every day.”
