| Meera Mahadevia’s work — accessories — will be acknowledged at The India Celebration Week

So, accessory designer Meera Mahadevia’s palpable excitement is justified.
She will be felicitated at the Newark Museum in New York on October 3 as part of The India Celebration Week. She will also perform an invocation to Lord Ganesha, and the Krishna Leela at the Charles W Engelhard Court at the museum, tickets to which have already sold out.
The event — India Chic: Couture Fashion with Meera Mahadevia — will include a preview of Meera’s bags, belts and jewellery displayed at the museum and a champagne reception.
“The award acknowledges the stark contrasts that make up India — old world charm seamlessly meets cutting edge modernity,” says Meera, whose accessories were born out of this dichotomy.
Her work reflects the unchartered nooks of small villages and towns from where Meera sources Nepali brassware, Ladaki semi-precious stone clips, Rajasthani silver handles, marble inlay pieces, Gujarati carved wooden handles and Kinkhab (brocade).
The meticulously chosen embellishments are then used to create bags, belts and shoes — all handcrafted and leather free. A fashion show will wrap up the evening.
Who buys Meera?
Jaya Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Sunita Kapoor, Rekha, Bipasha Basu, Parmeshwar and Tanya Godrej, Manek and Ayesha Guzder, Anuradha Mahindra and Sharmila Thackeray | | | | | | |
