 | | Ex-additional commissioner of police T K Chaudhary and (below) the disputed property | | The investigation into a Rs 100-crore property scam in Juhu has landed former additional commissioner of police T K Chaudhary and his son Ranjit in trouble. They have been named as respondents in the case involving a 3,040-sq m property near Sun ‘n’ Sand Hotel, Juhu, and have been accused of pressuring the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) into harassing the “original” owners of the land.
The Juhu police began investigating the forgery in the land deal earlier this month after different parties claimed ownership of the land and the city civil court asked the police to identify the original claimants.
The case
The problem started when Dawood henchman Romesh Sharma, who is currently in jail, encroached on the property belonging to Motilal Doshi, Pukhraj Doshi, Sawalchand Bafna and Tanvir Mohammed Merchant.
Even after Sharma landed in jail, the four could not get their property back, as one Arun Goyal allegedly got a power of attorney from four imposters, claiming to be the owners. Goyal then signed an MOU with Jaspal Enterprises, giving them the land. The matter reached the city civil court after the four original owners of the land sent a legal notice to Jaspal Enterprises.
The court, after hearing the case on April 5, asked the Juhu police to investigate the documents submitted and identify the real owners. During the investigation, the Doshis’ advocate, Ashok Pande, claimed the EOW had started “harassing” the original owners at the behest of Chaudhary and his son. Pande has now filed a case in the HC on behalf of his clients.
Chaudhary, however, said his name had cropped up only because he had advised Jaspal Enterprises to approach the court. When MiD DAY approached Ranjit yesterday, he refused to comment. Neena Bharwani, the advocate for Jaspal Enterprises, too refused to comment.
The probe so far has revealed that two of the addresses given by the people who sold the land to Jaspal Enterprises were same. Even the witnesses on the domicile certificates are the same. The cops have now been granted two more months to investigate the case. The next hearing is on June 16. |
