'Urine condoms could be handiwork of women'
By: Urvashi Seth

Mumbai:

Having failed to catch the perverts who have been hanging urine-filled condoms in ladies compartments of local trains, the authorities are now raising suspicion on women passengers.

Urine-filled condoms reappeared in the first class ladies compartment of a Virar-Churchgate local on Wednesday. The authorities feel women could be doing it to ensure a woman constable is present in each compartment. GRP Commissioner A K Sharma said, "Women could be doing this just to ensure that their demand of lady security officer in each compartment is met."

Last week, after a similar incident was reported on a Virar-Dadar local, the GRP had appointed a special squad of six officers to maintain vigil at Virar station to nab the culprits. The attempt, however, has proved futile, as more than 15 urine-filled condoms were found hanging from the handrails and on the seats of the compartment.

Sarita Modi (name changed), a marketing executive, said, "As soon as I boarded the train from Andheri I saw them.  Fed up with the stench, we called up the emergency number and were assured of immediate action, but no action was taken at any of the approaching stations."

Modi then, along with another commuter, got off at Dadar and called for help. However, they were once again assured that the mess would be cleared as soon as the train reached Churchgate.

About plans to nab the culprits, Sharma said yesterday, "We have placed a special squad at Virar station to maintain vigil to nab the culprits and we are planning to do the same at other stations too."
