Bangalore:

The police have decided to round up SIMI activists to prevent possible untoward incidents in the future.

The Anti Terrorist Squad of the Mumbai police has detained another SIMI activist from Santa Cruz Airport while he was trying to flee to the Middle East. The arrest was made based on the information obtained by the Belgaum police after the arrest of Tanveer Mulla. The arrested person identified as Iqbal Shoukat Ali Jakati, a resident of Belgaum was a close associate of Liyakhat Ali, who was arrested by the Mumbai police earlier.

"Jakati has been missing since the police began their crack down operations soon after the Friday blasts. Jakati was later brought to Belgaum for further questioning to determine his possible role," the Belgaum police said.

Prevention is better than cure

The police are bent on arresting SIMI activists to prevent untoward incidents in the future. According to a senior police officer, these SIMI activists have been under surveillance and were detained and questioned even earlier. However the police anticipated that these SIMI activists may prove dangerous if let loose as they could be contacted by their bosses. The officer said that these SIMI activists are trained and can provide local help and logistic support to carry out attacks, if they were let loose. "We have thus decided to detain them to prevent possible trouble in future," the officials said.
