Though it has been two years since the Supreme Court ordered schools to put an end to corporal punishment, Mumbai students like Sayed Mohammad Riyaz Haider (15) continue to bear the brunt of their teacher's ire.

Haider, a class 10 student of South Indian Welfare Society School, Matunga, was beaten black and blue by his Physical Training (PT) teacher yesterday. So severe was the beating that Haider ended up with a fracture in his right hand.

According to Haider, who is the class PT monitor had taken his class to the ground for the game of volleyball. "I asked everyone to get into line and then gave them the ball to play. This angered the PT teacher, and he yelled at me for taking the ball without his permission." When Haider informed the teacher that another teacher had asked him to do so, Ajay Singh, the PT teacher beat him with a cane stick repeatedly on his palm.

"My child has always been well behaved in school. Even if the teacher had any complaints against him, he should have brought it to our notice," Akhtar Ali, Haider's father said.

Police have registered a complaint of assault under section 325 of IPC against Singh. PSI Pratap Bhosle of Matunga police station will visit the school today and investigate the matter. "If we find the accusation to be true, we will arrest him," Bhosle said.

Dr K M Venkatesh, secretary of SIWS society denied any knowledge of the incident and said that the management will investigate the matter.
