That's what happened to Neeta Kharat, just two years after she wed Anil Sakhare.
Anil was working as an accountant at an NGO for the physically challenged, where he met and married Neeta on May 6, 2006, out of a misplaced sense of pity.
When he began living with her, he realised he couldn't cope with her handicap.
That's when he met Chitra Saigaonkar, introduced by a friend. They began dating and fell in love, unknown to Neeta, who doted on her husband partly because she was grateful that he'd married her.
On July 7, Anil went to work as usual, but didn't return home to Virar for two days. Beside her self with worry, Neeta and her father Anand, filed a missing complaint at the Virar police station.
Said Anand, "Just as we were filing the case, a person called Vilas Saigaonkar came in to say his daughter was missing. He saw Anil's picture with us and instantly recognised him."
On July 11, Anil called his father-in-law and told him he was is in Pune and had married Chitra. "He told me to take care of Neeta and apologised for dumping her," said Anand. Chitra also called her dad, who approached the cyber cell and asked the cops to trace her. The call was tracked to Pune. "When we reached the house, the door was locked from the outside. But when the police broke the door, they found Chitra and Anil inside," said Anand. Anil was booked for bigamy at the Virar police station.
Senior Police inspector Virar police station Pradeep Mane said, "We have checked Neeta and Anil's marriage certificate and arrested him under section 498,494 and 34 of the IPC (bigamy)."
