 VICTIM HIMSELF: Ken Haywood

Unable to solve the mystery behind the theft of Ken Haywood's IP address, the Forensic Sciences Laboratory here has approached Cyber Center Scientists attached to Purdue University in the US to solve the case.

Hackers got access to Haywood's WiFi connection and sent threat e-mails before the blasts in Ahmedabad. Rukmani Krishnamurthy, director of Forensics Science Laboratory in Kalina, says, "We are finding it difficult to track the user, who allegedly misused Haywood's Wi-Fi for sending the threat e-mail. We are putting our best efforts to solve the case and will be seeking technical expertise from the cyber experts associated with Purdue University, who are globally known for solving such hacked messages." She added that they are in the process of carrying out various technological experiments on the seized hardware to ascertain the misuse. However, it is a time-consuming exercise. "We have not submitted any report to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) as yet," she clarified.

Hemant Karkare, Joint Commissioner (ATS), said, "Indian Mujahideen had sent threats via e-mails from cyber cafes even after the blasts in Jaipur and Lucknow. However, this is the first time a Wi-Fi network was used to send the threat and the first time that the police are informed about it. Vijay Mukhi, a consultant with DSA Legal, says, "Earlier, such terror mails were anonymously sent from cyber cafes. But, cyber cafes are now asking people to identify themselves and there is no anonymity left. Terrorists are now using unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Tracking them is getting increasingly difficult."

Karkare says that the Information Technology Act states that each person is responsible for the security of his/ her network. If somebody misuses it, the onus is on him  to establish the misuse. He added that the ATS is in the process of gathering evidence to establish if Haywood committed any act of negligence.  Haywood had registered a complaint of misuse of his Wi-Fi system four months ago with TATA-VSNL and even got his account changed from limited to unlimited.
