Milind Deora, South Mumbai MP, Congress
This case had several aspects like human rights, science and even morals. Nobody would like to murder a child, but the health of the baby must also be considered. Everyone, including doctors, scientists, policy makers as well as the common man, must debate on this issue before we decide anything. The country should be asked for an opinion like they do in the US, before we frame a law. We are progressing fast and the laws of the country need to change accordingly. Whatever law is enacted, it should be done in a balanced manner keeping in mind the interests of the mother and the child. I will also take an initiative in my personal capacity.
Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena MP
We have to think about the mother as well as the child before we take any decision regarding the law. We must ensure that the child who comes into this world is healthy. The health of the child depends on a variety of factors, including the physical and working condition of the mother. There is no use in just changing laws. However, an initiative must be taken.
Gurudas Kamath, North East Mumbai MP, Congress
I don't agree with the Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss's comment that the "law cannot be changed for one person". If the doctors have to deal with several such cases and if parents are concerned about raising a handicapped child, a sympathetic view needs to be taken. In any case, we are allowing abortions up to 20 weeks. It's a matter of a few extra weeks. We, as representatives of Mumbai, will certainly raise the issue in Parliament.
Mohan Rawle, South Central Mumbai MP, Shiv Sena
I can speak on this issue only after studying the issue in totality.
Anand Paranjape, MP, Shiv Sena
This is a sensitive issue and I will have to study all aspects before commenting on it.
We also tried to contact North Central Mumbai MP Eknath Gaikwad, North Mumbai MP Govinda, North West Mumbai MP Priya Dutt and Rajya Sabha MP Bharatkumar Raut. While Gaikwad did not answer the call, Govinda and Dutt are out of the country. Raut was unavailable.
