a tribute: The special postal cover with Kempegowda's picture |
After the release of special envelopes with Kempegowda image a couple of days ago, the Karnataka postal circle has accepted a proposal to launch stamps with his picture.
"Though we had submitted a proposal in this regard a year ago the postal department didn't clear it. The department had given the nod for special postal covers with Kempegowda's images. Now we hope that stamps in honour of Kempedowda will be introduced soon," said P R Ramesh, former Bangalore mayor.
The Indian postal department's stamps recommendation committee will issue a proposal for stamps, mooted in 2007 by a group of Bangaloreans including Kempegowda's community, Vama Kula Kshatriya Thigalas.
New proposals
Bangalore Karaga and Emperor Kempegowda, with a history of 800 and 500 years respectively, are the new proposals before the postal department.
"This is the second time in one year that we are sending fresh proposals to bring out Kempegowda and Bangalore Karaga stamps," said Ramesh.
Keen
This will add to the existing 27 stamps representing Karnataka.
The postal department's Karnataka circle has also expressed its keenness over the project.
"We are happy that we got a special postal cover with Kempegowda's picture. We will also take up the Kempegowda stamp proposal. As he is Bangalore's pride, we will certainly take this proposal further and ensure that it becomes a reality," said J P Rajan, chief postmaster general, Karnataka circle.
Who was Kempegowda?
Kempegowda was said to have discovered Bangalore in 1537.
He first called the city Benda-kaaluru, which means, 'where he cooked his beans'.
He built more than a hundred lakes and many markets in and around the city.
