BMTC depots will soon become multi-transport hubs.

A BMRCL-BMTC initiative will convert the depots into integrated metro stations (IMS). The aim is to integrate all public transport services in the city.

Once the 45 BMTC depots are replaced with IMS, they will serve primarily as metro rail stations. The hubs will also serve as stops for monorail and BMTC buses.

The BMTC buses will act as a feeder system.

Work on

"Work has already started on these IMSs. This will be a unique solution to integrate transport services. It will strengthen the existing public transport system," said M N Shrihari, traffic expert and advisor to BMTC and BMRCL.

A deal has been inked to pave the way for the IMS. It aims at creating traffic transit management centres (TTMCs) in Bangalore.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already started construction work in nine depots.

"Work has been started in Jayanagar, Vijayanagar, Shanthinagar and Shivajinagar. Almost 65 per cent of work is completed in the Jayanagar depot. We hope to complete work in these nine depots by the end of this year.

Work on more depots will be taken up in various phases," said Dastagir Sharieff, chief traffic manager, BMTC.

BMRCL plans to complete the project by 2010, one year prior to the proposed commissioning of Metro rail.

Parking

Integrated metro stations will have personalized parking lots. Besides attracting people who regularly use public transport, this will also help those who want to park their vehicles and take the public transport.

Though this initiative aims to integrate transport services, BMRCL has made it clear that neither mono, nor BMTC bus route will run parallel to the metro route. They will co- exist at the metro stations.
