Stringent police scrutiny after the blasts in Ahmedabad and Bangalore has yielded positive results as far as car thefts in Mumbai are concerned.

There has been a substantial decline in the number of motor vehicle thefts after it was discovered that the cars used in the Ahmedabad blasts were stolen from Navi Mumbai.

According to a police officer, "The police are targeting car thieves and have picked many of them for questioning. The number of motor vehicle thefts has dropped from 10-12 cars per day to four to six cars."

Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police, crime, said, "The rate of car thefts had been decreasing and there has been a further decline after the blasts."

The police have already nabbed 21 gangs that were operating on a large scale in the city, Navi Mumbai and Thane.

Now, not only have several gangs involved in car thefts been lying low, but some have also split up. Some of these thieves have even fled the city.

As a result, said an officer from the Anti-Motor Vehicles Theft Cell, only petty thieves have been carrying out car robberies these days. He added that these thieves generally steal a car or two and sell them immediately.
