Not their fault: Mayuresh Pokhrankar did not file charges because he believed the accident was fated to happen. file pic |
How did the accident take place? Was it your fault?
It wasn't our fault. We had got our car repaired that evening. We wanted to eat out and were driving on JJ flyover when a biker went past us at full speed. He popped up in front of our car and to avoid hitting him, I slammed the brakes. The car swerved, jumped the divider and hit Mayuresh who was on the other side.
Why didn't you take him to hospital?
We did try. It wasn't a hit-and-run. When we realised we had hit someone, we stopped and a man pointed us to Mayuresh, who had fallen 50-ft below the flyover. When we drove there, he'd already been taken to hospital.
We then went to the Pydhonie police station to surrender.
Did you bother to go to the hospital?
We certainly tried to. We got Mayuresh's father's number and called him, but he told us they did not want to see us.
Did you visit Mayuresh after the operation?
Yes, every week, once a week, since the day of the accident. We were concerned.
Why did Mayuresh not file any charges against you?
He is like Allah ka farishta for us, as he acknowledged that it was not our mistake. It was fated to happen.
Did you offer to pay for his hospitalisation?
Yes, we have told Mayuresh to let us know the amount. We want to bear 50 per cent of the cost.
Is this your first near-fatal accident?
Yes.
Has your life changed after the accident?
Yes, tremendously. I have started taking a taxi to work. I haven't touched the car ever since the accident. I will never ever drive again.
Your message to drivers?
Own up if it's your mistake and mistakes do happen. If you escape the law, there is God above. You will be punished.
