The daughter of a British millionaire was arrested in Beijing yesterday after staging a protest outside the Olympic stadium.

Lucy Fairbrother (23), who is the daughter of a Barings banker, and three friends sneaked several huge banners and flags calling for a 'free Tibet' past intense security.

Iain Thom, from Scotland, then climbed up a 120 ft lighting pole to unfurl the banners.

Thom (24) said the action was aimed at highlighting the Communist government's 'use of the Olympics as a propaganda tool'.

The first banner read, One World, One Dream: Free Tibet in English, and the second: 'Tibet Will Be Free' in English and 'Free Tibet' in Chinese.

Lucy is a veteran Tibet activist who took part in the protests that marred the Olympic torch procession through London. Her father Jeremy  and mother Linda live in a £1.3million house near the university.

Linda, a broadcast journalist, said she was proud her daughter was taking a stand.

"I am very proud that Lucy is getting involved with something like this. It's a good cause for human rights and for democracy. It's also a totally non-violent movement. The protesters are not saying they hate the Chinese or the government, but are just trying to bring some very dire human rights abuses to the world's attention.

"If my daughter's going to be put in prison for anything I'm glad it's for a human rights protest."
