Newborn suffers fracture during Caesarian delivery
By: Sanjeev Devasia

Mumbai: A newborn baby suffered a fracture on his thigh while he was being pulled out of his mother's womb during a Caesarian operation. Jyotsna Kondvilkar, a resident of Byculla, gave birth to a boy at 1 pm on Sunday at KEM Hospital.

The child was rushed to the ICU immediately, but the parents were informed only by 4 pm. "We do not know what happened during the operation. A doctor told me that the baby had suffered a fracture, while he was being pulled out during the operation and that he was shifted to the ICU.

He said it was an emergency operation and the baby's leg was removed in haste to save the mother," said Umesh Kondvilkar, father of the child.

The doctors are unable to explain what forced them to pull the child in haste. Hospital sources blame the negligence of the doctor.

However, authorities at KEM Hospital refute these allegations. M E Yeolekar, dean at KEM, says, "I don't think there was any negligence. These are time-bound operations and sometimes on-the-spot decisions are taken during Caesarian operations to save the life of the mother and/or child. The baby's condition will definitely improve. We will consult an orthopaedic surgeon about the condition of the baby."
