New Delhi:

Problem solved: Haroon Yusuf

Traffic jams on city roads will not be dissolved until Delhiites start using public transport extensively.

Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf yesterday said that the problem of traffic congestion and limited road space in the capital could be solved only if people in the city started using public transport rather than depending on private vehicles.

Yusuf assured that the Government on its part was committed to providing safe and pollution free public transport system.

The Minister's statement came a couple of days after the Delhi traffic police blamed the civic agencies and the
government for poor condition of roads, potholes and insufficient drainage system.

Commuters and office goers had a bitter experience of long traffic jams during the last week due to incessant rainfall. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SN Srivastava had blamed civic agencies for the mess. He said that the capital had more than 55 lakh vehicles running on its road and about 1 lakh vehicles from neighboring states entered the capital everyday and also about 700 new vehicles registered every day in the city, he said.

This huge traffic volume puts immense pressure on the limited road space and one could not find a long term solution by expanding roads or making over bridges, he added.

Yusuf was speaking at the inaugural function of new zonal transport office in Vasant Vihar, South-West District.
