18 die due to malaria

Rattled by a malaria outbreak, the UP health department today transferred the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the district and dispatched a team of 100 doctors to affected villages as the death toll from the disease mounted to 18.


Dr R C Agarwal has been appointed as the new CMO of Kanpur village in place of Satya Singh, officials said.


"Situation is under control now. A team of 20 doctors that includes Director General (Health) Ishwar Sharan Srivastava has been sent to the affected areas," said Additional Director of Health.


Another team of 100 doctors has also been dispatched, he said.


Along with the paramedical staff, this team of doctors will distribute medicines and conduct blood tests in the affected villages, Singh said. Moreover, a team of doctors from Delhi has reached Kanpur.

According to official statistics, around 150 villages in the district have been severely hit by Malaria and at least 17,000 patients have been treated till date. However, 18 people have died in the last 10 days.


The district administration has initiated cleaning drive in 600 villages to minimise the incidence of Malaria, 60,000 Chlorine tablets have already been distributed and 3,200 people have been given Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).
