Look what they did: (Top) The potholes on the airport flyover before they were patched up. (Above) The potholes on the road leading to the flyover have also been filled in the same manner | To meet the August 23 deadline on filling potholes, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has done a shoddy job on the airport flyover at Vile Parle. They have filled the potholes with pebbles and sa-nd instead of tar and asphalt. The MMRDA, MSRDC and BMC had set the Saturday deadline to fill potholes throughout Mumbai, including the Western and Eastern Express Highways after a BMC survey revealed that the internal roads were in a dismal state. They had pledged to fill them with asphalt or paver blocks. An MSRDC official said, "Asphalt wears out every time it rains, but it is wrong to use pebbles instead. We will ask the contractor to remove them immediately." An MMRDA engineer said, "These pebbles have been used as a temporarily fix and will be replaced soon. The traffic police had insisted we finish the work soon to lessen traffic problems." MMRDA looks after both the express highways, while MSRDC maintains the airport flyover and some of the road before and after it. But this temporary fix could prove to be very dangerous. Road experts said though these pebbles might lessen the speed of vehicles, they could also result in skidding at times.
