The arrest comes at a time when Priyanka had been receiving threatening messages from unidentified sources. Crime branch sources disclosed that they are trying to connect the threats to gangster Bunty Pandey, who has been threatening Bollywood celebrities for sometime to get a foothold in Mumbai's underworld and Jaju could be a key link.
The underworld angle assumes significance in light of the fact that Jaju had patched up his differences with Priyanka. They had parted ways after Jaju had alleged that he had not received dues of around Rs 1 crore from the actress. But the dispute had been amicably settled later.
Pandey, meanwhile, is known to have a strong base in Madhya Pradesh, especially the poppy growing areas near Mhow from where Jaju was arrested. It is still not clear what he was doing there and how the police arrested him.
Jaju is lodged at the high security Crime Branch cell at Crawford Market. Crime Branch officials are tight-lipped about Jaju's arrest till they produce him before a metropolitan magistrate today. "We do not want to disclose anything," said Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Devan Bharti.
