Pune:

In order to create awareness among students of geoinformatics a three-day symposium on Open Source Geo-Space, will be organised between August 28 and 30 in the city. Leading government IT research organisations and education institutes will be participating in the seminar.

Talking to MiD DAY, the director general and chief executive officer of the Science and Technology Park, Rajendra Jagdale said, "This will open the world of free information in geoinformatics and help students who cannot afford to download such information from the internet."

Many students and faculty of geoinformatics are unaware of this goldmine of information made available to them, free of charge, by an international voluntary organisation, Open Source Geo-space (OSGS).

Students who have at least completed two semesters of learning geoinformatics will benefit from this symposium, which will train around 30 students and 10 faculty members from various participating institutions.
Participants include Indian Society for Geomatics, Science and Technology Park, Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics, Bharati Vidyapeeth, and Center for Advanced Computing.

For this, the financial contribution of Rs 1.5 lakh comes from the Department of Science and Technology. President of OSGS and Deputy National Remote Sensing Agency, Hyderabad and Director India Chapter, P S Roy are actively involved. Major General Siva Kumar, National Research Data Management Systems is also involved in the project.

The trained people will become ambassadors of the open source movement truly democratising specialised information on the subject," Jagdale said.
