Superstar Mohanlal launches broking firm

Film actor Mohanlal, who has essayed different roles in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi films, is trying his hands in a new arena- equity trading.


The actor has joined hands with Baby Marine Exports, Fedex Securities, Smart Financial Thakker Group and industrialist S M Hegde to promote the broking company -- Hedge Equities, which is expected to start its operations shortly.


The company will have 15 branches in the state in the first phase and also has plans to open branches in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, according to company sources.


Hedge Equities will be offering equity, futures, options, depository services, commodity broking and mutual funds distribution to its customers.


This venture comes shortly after Mohanlal launched Max Lab Entertainments, which will focus on film distribution, production and running multiplexes and shopping malls in the state.


Film producer Antony Perumbavoor and industrialist K C Baby are among those who have parterned with the actor for the new venture.


The company would be setting up a chain of multiplexes and shopping malls in Chalakaudy in Thrissur, Kozhikode, Ponani and Pathnamthitta.


Among his other business ventures are a star hotel in Kochi- The Travancore Court.


The actor had also launched 'masalas' under the brand name ''Mohanlal's Taste Buds' which had now been sold to Eastern Condiments. However, he continues to be the brand ambassador for the same.


Mohanlal's latest film 'Akasha Gopuram', directed by national award winning director K P Kumaran, is an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play 'The Master Builder'', which is running in cinema houses in the state now.


The film has the best of talent from Hollywood and the UK, Tamil and Malayalam film industries.


In 2002, he received rave reviews for his role as a police officer in Hindi film 'Company', but burnt his fingers in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Aag', a remake of the 1975 blockbuster 'Sholay'.


The actor had also caught the ire of prohibitionists in the state after he appeared in a whiskey advertisement a few months ago.


Mohanlal, who is also a magic ethusiast, had to give up his plans to perform the dangerous 'fire escape' on April 27 at Thiruvananthapuram following pressure from his well wishers and fans.
