ANXIOUS MOMENTS: The parking area of Prabhu Kunj. FILE PIC | Prabhu Kunj, Peddar Road's famous building known for housing some of Mumbai's rich and famous, including singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and their families, witnessed anxious moments on Tuesday evening, after an unidentified Fiat car parked inside the compound fuelled a terror scare.
The car, it later turned out, belongs to Rashmi Mansukhani, a building resident who had parked the car on the spot to ensure that no one else used the space.
Said Narayan Dumbre, senior inspector of Gamdevi police station, "Residents of the building sounded scared. Many high-profile people live there, so we took no chances. Thankfully, the owners were identified before the bomb detection squad reached the spot."
Mansukhani said it was not the first time the car had been parked at the spot. "I am surprised that the residents never noticed the car before," said Mansukhani.
The housing society has asked the Mansukhanis to produce proof that they own the Fiat. MiD DAY's calls to society office bearers went unanswered.
Case history Prabhu Kunj's residents are fighting a court case over the February 5, 2008, annulment order of the permanent allotment of open parking space in the building compound, which was approved in 2000. At a later date, the society decided to impose a fine of Rs 1,000 per day on seven residents, including the Mansukhanis, for refusing to move out their cars after the allotment was withdrawn. |
