Churchgate station will soon have bulletproof bunkers. Windowpanes of select offices in its premises will also be bulletproofed.

While the reinforced-cement-and-concrete bunkers will be constructed by Western Railway (WR) engineers, tenders will be floated for the bulletproofing of windows, which, officials say, is expected to cost Rs 7 to Rs 8 lakh.

A senior rail official said the move follows the November Mumbai Terror attack on CST, after which a Railway Board official visited Churchgate station and checked security arrangements there.

The official stressed upon the need for bulletproofing spots at all major stations that can be used by Railway Protection Force personnel to monitor passenger traffic and to retaliate when there is a terror attack.

"We are planning to build some bunkers and bullet-proof select offices in Churchgate to deter terror attacks. Such bunkers will also be constructed at other major stations," said Western Railway Divisional Railway Manager CP Sharma.

RPF asked to don uniform off-duty
Western Railway Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Devendra Kasar has asked all RPF personnel to don uniforms on their way home from work, and carry their walkie-talkies along. The idea is to have visible presence of uniformed men on WR trains and premises 24x7 who can act during emergencies.
