Experts say estranged couples in the city are responding much more favourably to counselling since Mumbai Terror attack

Professionals like psychiatrist Dr Rajiv Anand and psychologist Seema Hingorrany, who play referee to estranged couples in the city, say the 26/11 terror attacks are bringing some of these embittered souls together.

Investor Subhash Khanna (45) and his wife Seema, who have been seeking help from Anand for the last year, had their umpteenth session scheduled for November 28.

But, 26/11 happened and changed their perspective forever.

"I was glued to the television on November 26 and 27. I felt it would be selfish to discuss our petty problems with the doctor when people were dying. Now, we've nearly patched up.

My children are happy with the change. I feel sad that we came to our senses only after a horrific event like 26/11. We have realised how fragile life is," said Subhash, who has been married to Seema for 18 years.

Anand says there are at least 11 couples who come for counselling at his Andheri clinic, who have buried the hatchet after the terror attacks. "Remarkable things happened when families and couples stay together for long hours, either watching the horrific incident unfold in TV or because they are afraid to step out of home," said
Dr Anand.

Hingorrany says nearly 80 per cent of couples, who come for counselling, have improved their relationships following the latest terror attacks on Mumbai. "They have a more optimistic outlook towards therapy now. Earlier, they did not even want to look at each other. One of the couples discussed how they would feel if either of them died. The realisation sent chills down their spine," said Hingorrany.
