TIGHT VIGIL: Police at the entrance of Breach Candy apartment, where barrister KBN Lam lives. PIC/BIPIN KOKATE | Two men break into flat and damage furniture, showcase and lamps
The home of barrister KBN Lam (63), who has said that he would defend terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Qasab, was broken into yesterday. Two men barged into the fourth-floor Breach Candy apartment and broke two lamps, a showcase, two pieces of furniture and some tableware. Lam, who lives with his 96-year-old mother, was in the bathroom when the incident took place.
Justifying his stand to defend Qasab, Lam said, "I want to defend Qasab so that the court can pass a judgment on his crime. If we choose to not take up his case, he may be discharged or acquitted. In such a case, the police has to release him immediately."
Lam told MiD DAY that the men had left by the time he came out of the bathroom. "I called the police who subsequently told me that the men had come to murder me. I am not afraid, but I do worry for my mother's safety. The police have posted men to guard me," Lam added.
'Cool Lam'
Gulab Gupta, a vegetable vendor in the neighbourhood, who accompanied the police to Lam's house for the panchnama, said Lam did not look ruffled at all. "Lam admitted that he had expected some trouble to come his way and that the attack did not surprise him," said Gupta.
Gamdevi senior inspector N Dumbre said that there was no evidence to suggest that the attackers were members of any particular political party. "We are on the lookout for them," added Dumbre. |
