Jammers on edu premises

By: Kranti Vibhute
MANAGEMENT institutes and schools in the city are installing jammers to prevent mobile phones being used and misused during seminars, lectures and exams.

Abhishek Vengurlekar, Office Superintendant of Chanakya Institute of Management, Andheri said, "It is embarrassing when well-known speakers visit for guest lectures and a cell-phone rings from the audience. So we have placed two jammers as a demo in our institute. One is in the seminar room and the other in a classroom. We will install them in more classrooms soon."

Maqbool Barwelkar, public relation manager of the Islamic Research Foundation, said, "We conduct lectures on Islam for people from all walks of life including students from schools and colleges. To avoid inconvenience and disturbance during such lectures and important meetings we have placed one jammer in our foundation."

Kumaar Thakkar, MD of Belifal Innovations and Technologies Pvt Ltd, said, "We have provided more than 200 jammers across the country. With new age technologies, cheating during exams has become common. The jammer can prevent cell-phones being used to cheat."

What is a jammer?

A mobile phone jammer costs between Rs 13,000 to Rs 2 Crore. Traditionally, military establishments and prisons used mobile phone jammers for security reasons. Now, educational bodies, restaurants, movie theatres, concerts, shopping malls, financial institutions and religious centres like temples and churches are using it to enforce a silence zone around them.
