BBMP plans 100 solar street lights

By: Lavanya Srinivasan

If the government puts its plans into action, Bangalore will soon have a new epithet solar city.

K Jairaj, principal secretary to the energy department said, "As a part of this initiative, one lakh houses in Bangalore will be brought under the purview of utilising solar energy, with students and NGOs creating awareness about it," he said. The energy department and BBMP will instal 100 solar street lights, initially, each costing Rs 53,000 in and around the city.

The government is resorting to such measures due to shortage of power. "Solar energy is something that is freely available to all, so we must make good use of it," said S Subramanya, BBMP commissioner.
