Mumbai Crime Branch to probe 26/11 attacks: Mah Home Min

By: PTI

Maharashtra government has decided to entrust the probe of Mumbai terror attacks to a single investigating agency "to avoid duplication and mess" in the process, State Home Minister Jayant Patil said.

The probe into the 26/11 terror strikes will be carried out by the Mumbai Crime Branch, Patil informed the state legislative assembly.

"The terrorist attack at CST Railway station Mumbai was investigated by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) while Crime Branch is already probing into the strikes on three other targets the Nariman House, Hotel Taj and Oberoi Trident," Patil told the House yesterday.

"Necessary orders for probe by one agency has already been issued to avoid duplication and mess," Patil, said while replying to a marathon debate on deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra.

However, several Opposition leaders including Gopinath Munde seemed to be miffed by the move and insisted that the ATS should probe the entire episode.

Describing the government's decision as "improper" Munde questioned the propriety of setting up the ATS if it was not allowed to investigate terror attacks
