VICTIM: Raj Avasthi | The Bandra Court yesterday directed the police to file an FIR against Director General of Police A N Roy, and some policemen from the Vakola and Kurla police stations. Roy and the other cops allegedly produced fake documents to justify the arrest of Raj Avasthi (35) under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.
Avasthi is a member of Medha Patkar's National Alliance of People's Movements.
In December 2005, the then commissioner of police, Roy had filed cases of extortion and criminal intimidation against Avasthi, who was detained on January 3, 2006, and released on May 3, 2006 after Medha Patkar approached the Bombay HC.
"An RTI application filed by me revealed that no police station in the city or commissioner's office had any record of receipt of any of these documents. Clearly, these bogus documents were fabricated by the police," Avasthi said.
"I was punished for proving to the World Bank (WB) that MUTP project-affected-people were being unfairly treated due to corruption among officials, following which, the WB stopped funding the project," Avasthi added. None of the policemen mentioned in the FIR could be contacted despite repeated attempts.
