Diligent: Ashok Kamte | Mumbai's Commissioner of Police Hasan Gafoor has entrusted the task of providing commando training to Mumbai police to a special weapon and tactics team of the Hong Kong police a responsibility that had earlier been given to slain Additional Commissioner of Police (North-East Region) Ashok Kamte.
Gafoor confirmed that special weapon and tactics teams will arrive from Hong Kong early next month. The visiting officials are expected to impart specialised training in the use of sophisticated weapons. Stress is being laid on the physical conditioning of the personnel to get them to the level of an army officer to battle terrorists.
"Kamte was training our policemen in the use of sophisticated weaponry at the Ghat-kopar firing range after he took charge of the north zone. He had, in fact, trained 70 personnel since September at the Ghatkopar firing range, and was to train another 60 next month," said Gafoor. Kamte also put them through physical drill to whip them to shape.
The commissioner further added that some volunteers from the police would be trained to stop getaway vehicles on busy road and prevent terrorists from escaping with hostages.
| What will our commando cops learn? |
* Working in two-man buddy teams * Use of sophisticated weapons, including AK-47s, MP-5s, Glock pistols, and sniper rifles * Develop fitness levels to those of army personnel * Breaking into buildings occupied by terrorists with or without hostages * Develop battle inoculation (Inuring personnel to war-like conditions that are inevitable while tackling terrorists) |
