You need to think twice and check all the credentials before you lease out your flat to a stranger. And if you fail to do so, your flat along with your reputation, might be at ante as the person can dupe people and organisations projecting to be the owner of your house.
That's exactly what happened to Shailesh Tembhurne, a 34 year old Pune-based techie, who owns a flat in Kalyan near Mumbai. Tembhurne had leased out his flat to Rupali Bhanushali, a 37-year-old woman, who secured loans from various banks stating the address to be hers.
And now, the recovery agents are stalking him and his family. The affected banks are planning to move court. "If they send notices on her name and she does not respond, my flat may get auctioned," Tembhurne fears. He adds, "She has fled and all contact numbers that she had given aren't working now."
Tembhurne has filed an FIR with the Kalyan police against Bhanushali. Also, in his complaint, he has stated that she had come to him through two brokers from Kalyan named Shyam Yevale and Sachin Bhanushali, who claimed to be her brother.
When Mid DAY contacted them, Yevale said that he was not aware about Bhanushali's whereabouts. Sensing trouble, Sachin denied that she was his sister.
Bhanushali left the flat in a scurry without even taking her belongings and the deposit money.
Con woman's swindle
As per the papers with Tembhurne, Bhanushali had procured a personal loan, motorcycle loan and credit cards of various banks worth more than Rs 2 lakh by claiming to be the owners of the flat.
Bhanushali had first procured a personal loan of Rs 65,000 from ICICI Bank in Thane and showed one 35-year old Sandeep Shailesh Temburne as the owner of the house and son of Tembhurne.
Later, she produced another person as Jothi Sailesh Temburne as Tembhurne's wife to acquire another Rs 65,000 from another bank.
She even obtained a State Bank of India (SBI) bank credit card stating her name to be Bharati Bhanushali and spent more than Rs 16,000.
What's more, she even allowed one Aslam Sharif Shaikh to use Tembhurne's Kalyan address to secure a credit card from ICICI bank.
The story does not end here, Bhanushali went on to let one Vimala Nair procure a Barclaycard Gold card. Nair spent Rs 48,000 and returned only Rs 18,000 by cheque and here too she has given Tembhurne's address.
