Mumbai: Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravindra Angre, one of the "encounter specialists" of Maharashtra police, today surrendered before the Thane police in connection with a complaint of extortion and assault lodged against him by a builder. Angre's anticipatory bail application was rejected by the High Court as well as the Supreme Court. Now posted in Pune, Angre was once with the anti-extortion cell of the Thane police, and is credited with over 30 encounter killings. Ganesh Wagh, a builder based in Thane, had filed a complaint at the Naupada police station that sometime in October, Angre, along with three unidentified persons, barged into his office, and assaulted him.
Angre allegedly wanted Wagh to make his wife a partner in his business. He also forced Wagh to sign on a blank paper, and took away a Scorpio and a Santro belonging to Wagh, the latter said. Talking to the reporters, after the surrender, Angre said that this was a "political conspiracy".
"Everybody knows that Wagh used to frequent my office," the cop said, adding that the builder was denying his wife her rightful share in the real estate project in Thane. |
