All stalls at city?s most popular food street near Cross Maidan demolished. Road planned to turn Mumbai into Shanghai

By:

South Mumbai’s famous Khau galli at Cross Maidan is gone. A favourite with Mumbaikars for over 45 years, all the 23 stalls, selling everything from Chinese dosas to the jumbo vada pav, were demolished by the BMC yesterday afternoon.

“The BMC had given us a 30-day notice to vacate the place. They plan to construct a road here so that Mumbai can be made into Shanghai.

But the fact is, we have not occupied the place illegally as we have stall licences,” said Guddu Shah, manager of the Jhunka Bhakar Kendra.

He admitted however, that place had been given to them on the proviso that the BMC could vacate the place if and when they so desired.

A stall owner added, “We must be given another place as around 250 to 300 people are now jobless and have no home as they all lived here.” They will now file an application in court.
