SCARY REMINDER: The CNG cylinder of an autorickshaw exploded on S V Road, Khar, yesterday afternoon. Thankfully, there were no passengers in the vehicle and even the driver wasn’t nearby.

Even though Monday’s horrific accident at Jogeshwari involved a car running on LPG, several car owners in the city have cancelled their CNG conversion orders. They say they have been shaken by this incident.

“I wanted to fix a CNG tank in my Wagon-R, as it would save me Rs 3.5 per km. I travel almost 60 km per day. But after this incident, I have decided not to convert my vehicle into CNG till I know all the details,” said Malad resident Abhijit Kashyap. He cancelled his order on Monday.

Sunil Arora from Goregaon too has postponed his order. “I know that CNG is totally safe, but I’m still a little worried after the Jogeshwari incident. I have been visiting some websites to learn more about CNG,” he said.

But for CNG kit dealers, this is as bad as it gets. “Around 80 per cent of sales have dropped in the past few days,” said Yogesh Panchal, president of Auto-gas Retrofitters Association.

Manish Pandey, owner of Manix Motor Gas, Goregaon, added, “I have been receiving 10 calls every day asking for more details on CNG kits. Sales have dropped around 70 per cent and my loss so far is around Rs 12,000.”
