A month-long AIDS and HIV awareness campaign, Jo Bolel Toch Sikander (If you talk, you win), felicitated the final five winners from Maharashtra on Saturday. Initiated by the BBC World Service Trust (arm of BBC that specialises in development communications), the campaign was carried out in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in November 2007.
As part of the campaign, a contest on “condom normalisation” encouraged people to talk freely about the subject. A talking parrot was the mascot for the same. The contest encompassed a riddle, the answer to which was “condom” itself. For instance, “It’s a sign of manhood, but it’s not a moustache” drew in a response of four lakh callers.
The campaign reached the public through various media except SMS, to avoid defeating the purpose of the campaign’s message of talking. The prizes included Nokia donated phones (3110 classic) and Airtel gave away sim cards, to the winners. |
