Even as the Thane police declared encounter specialist Ravindra Angre (45), missing and sought his suspension from service, the cop said he would surrender in a few days.

Angre has gunned down at least 51 alleged gangsters, including Suresh Manchekar, during his 25-year tenure with the police force.  However, in October 2007, he was charged with extortion. Angre who had earlier spoken to MiD DAY said, “It’s political vendetta. My own men are gunning for me. The underworld wants me out, so they have hatched a conspiracy,” he said.

A Thane builder, Ganesh Wagh, filed a complaint with the Naupada police that Angre and two subordinates were pressuring him to transfer two properties in the name of Angre’s wife Dhanshri. In response to Wagh’s fresh application seeking to prosecute Angre for contempt of court, Angre was asked to surrender by December 11, 2007. But the Thane police filed an affidavit in the High Court saying he was untraceable. In addition, the police are also moving court to get a proclamation order issued against Angre, which means he can legally be called an absconder.
