A majority of the women, who were rescued on Monday, hail from Kadappah, Chittoor and Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh. According to the police officials, majority of the girls were rescued from brothel number 42 and 64. The police have also arrested 24 traffickers in the process.
The raid came after a city NGO STOP (Stop trafficking and oppression of children and women) informed the police. An FIR had also been lodged by Laxmidevi, a resident of Anantpur district, about the ongoing human trafficking in GB road.
Sources in the GB road said on the day of the raid the Andhra Pradesh police officials were led by a burkha clad woman, who was earlier a resident in one of the brothels there.
“That woman used to work in one of the brothels. The woman was from Andhra Pradesh and had run away from this place. At around 7.30 this woman led the police into the brothels and the police rescued the girls,” a pimp informed.
The girls who were rescued were then sent to Nirmal Chaya, state protective home for women. Other 24 pimps were sent on a one-day judicial custody. The Andhra police officials said that they expected the court proceedings to get over soon, after which the girls would be taken to their respective homes or for rehabilitation.
Nirmal Chaya will serve as a temporary house for the rescued girls and during the period the girls will be educated. Not only this, but they would be taught music and other activities.
Police not acting
Kailash Satyarthi, Chairman of NGO STOP said, “Human trafficking is a big business and there is a lot of money involved in it. Everyone knows about the child trafficking and prostitution going on in GB road, but the police are so corrupt that they do not act. Timely intervention can prevent this in the Capital. “
However, Delhi's Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satyendra Garg said, “We are not silent on this issue. Whenever we receive complaints we act immediately and rescue girls. We also have informers who keep a track on such kind of happenings. Whenever we receive any information from them, our men take appropriate action.”
He also added that in this case, the Andhra Pradesh police had received a complaint at a local police station in Andhra and they came to the city on the basis of that complaint.
Rates in GB road
One can get a girl for Rs 150 - Rs 900. In brothels like Kashmiri building, one can get young girls from all places of India. The service to the customers is also guaranteed, but one has to be prepared to shell out somewhere around Rs 900 - Rs 1000.
“The girls in Kashmiri building are very hot tempered, if you do not shell out good money, they will kick you out,” said a local pimp. A large number of girls in GB Road hail from Andhra Pradesh, Bangladesh, West Bengal and Nepal. |
