THANE Jail officials allegedly assaulted a 28-year-old undertrial severely. They ended up breaking his legs and refused to even send him to a government hospital for treatment.
The assault, allegedly by jail officials, came to light, as there have been two attacks in the prison in the past 10 days.
The matter came to the fore after undertrial Shamshuddin Shaikh got a detailed sketch of the attack on him smuggled out through his brother Khalid.
Khalid was stunned when he saw his brother lifted by three inmates for the ‘mulakat’ or meeting last evening. Shamshuddin complained that he was not even sent to the government hospital for treatment.
Initially, jail authorities were reluctant to allow visitors to meet Shamshuddin. Permission was granted only after Khalid was insistent.
“The jail authorities refused to send my brother for treatment. He is suffering since two days after jail officials assaulted him with sticks,” lamented Khalid.
Deputy Inspector of Police (Prisons) S P Yadav said a police complaint had been lodged after Shamshuddin clashed with another inmate.
“I am not aware that his limbs were broken. The local police should have had a medical report before the complaint was lodged,” remarked Yadav.
Shamshuddin (prisoner No M-6903), in a letter said he had been beaten so brutally that he is crippled. “I cannot walk,” he stated in a two-page letter, a copy of which is available with MiD DAY.
Shamshuddin’s problems started when Ashiq Mental stabbed himself with a blade on January 15. Jail officials were led to believe that the former was involved in the attack.
According to police records, Shamshuddin has a criminal record. He is named in two cases at Thane and Vikhroli Parksite, where he lives. Gangster Chhota Rajan’s key lieutenants Vicky Malhotra had clashed with Vijay Kedare recently.
Inmates Shashikant Sonane and Prashant Deshmukh were also assaulted as part of the internecine gang war in jail.
