The city airport has launched a drive against animals straying onto the Nagpur runway.
Authorities of Dr Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, launched a vigorous drive against animals, right from monkeys to deer, straying onto the runway, a top airport official said today.
"We have engaged a monkey-trapper from Dangali district to catch them and take them to the forests. Simultaneously, another party has been entrusted the job of catching pigs who often stray onto the runway," Airport Controller S N Borkar said.
He said the monkey-trapping was successful as 11 monkeys were caught and later released in the jungle under the supervision of Airport Authority of India (AAI) officers on Monday.
"Similarly, AAI has 12 zone guns to scare away the animals. We have fixed reflective ribbons along the runway, which reflects light, and the birds get scared," he said. He said AAI was in touch with the forest department to overcome the problems.
"Around 254 armed guards are patrolling the area round-the-clock but the real problem lies with the people living adjacent to the boundary wall," he said.
"Some mutton shops close to the boundary wall are throwing waste into the airport area and it attracts birds and amimals. A combined effort is needed to solve the problem," he said.
"Police should patrol the area and remove unauthorised structures and shops and the municipal authorities should trap stray dogs in and around airport premises," Borkar said.
