Mumbai: An overnight downpour left several areas in Mumbai flooded and disrupted rail and road transport on Tuesday, ensuring that many offices remained empty and many schools and colleges shut down early.

Advising Mumbaikars to stay indoors, Vilas Vaidya, who heads the disaster management authority in the civic body, said, "We alert all citizens to be careful." A Brihanamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) communique suggested that people should not leave their homes till about 1 pm, unless extremely necessary.

Railway officials said there were delays on the suburban network. While trains on Western weere late by 15 to 20 minutes, the Central and Harbour lines were shut at 8 am.

In several areas, BEST diverted its buses . In the worst-hit areas, many office-goers waded through knee-deep water.

A Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson said that flights at the international and domestic airports were delayed by around 30 minutes.

Attendance in most government and corporates offices was thin. According to the MET department, Mumbai received 140 mm of rain in four hours on Tuesday morning.

A high tide at 11 am meant that the floodwater will take time to recede.
