CCTV in BEST buses go missing

Mumbai:

CCTV camera in a BEST bus

Shortly after the 7/11 train blasts rattled Mumbai in 2006, BEST floated a proposal to install Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras in their entire fleet of 3,600 buses.

The idea behind the proposal was to increase security measures on the BEST fleet.

However, nearly two years after the announcement, only 650 buses have installed the CCTVs. To make matters worse, several of the cameras are missing from these buses, mostly stolen.

"Many buses which had CCTV cameras only have wires hanging now. It has been reported that the cameras are missing from the buses. The cameras cannot be stolen from our depots but removing them is very easy and anybody can steal them," said a senior BEST official.

However, Pravin Chheda, BEST Committee Chairman, denied reports of any CCTV thefts.

"I have no idea about this theft, but I will definitely look into the matter," he said. There are two CCTV cameras on the bus. One is located above the front door, while the other is opposite the rear door. Since the cameras are fixed they focus only on a limited area.

Anishka Chaudhary, EMNET Samsara Media Private Ltd, the company that installed the cameras and LCD screens said, "I have not been informed about this incident from the Undertaking. I will check it."

BOX: Black box
The digital video recorder called black box records data for a maximum of 3 days (following which it will be over written). Data recorded by the cameras can be transferred using a pen drive. Also contrary to expectations the cameras will not help in monitoring pickpockets and anti-social elements since the cameras are fixed and cannot rotate.
