BKC won't drown this year

Mumbai:

The Taximen Colony in Kurla was one of the worst hit areas last year. However, de-silting of the Mithi river has ensured no flooding

As the second wave of monsoon fury hit Mumbai, low-lying areas like Hindmata, Kala Chowkie, Sion, Bandra, Chembur and parts of Goregaon went under water yet again.

However, one such low-lying area escaped water logging despite a 15-hour downpour.

The stretch at Bandra Kurla Complex and adjacent areas approaching Kurla did not experience any major water logging this time. Residents of the area should thank the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) for this development.

Last year, BKC and Kurla were the worst affected as the Mithi River flooded homes and commercial premises in the entire zone. Areas like Kranti Nagar, Bharat Nagar, Taximen Colony and LBS road near BKC were the worst affected in last year's rains.

However, this year the MMRDA has lived up to its promise of de-silting, deepening and widening the Mithi River. In addition, improvement of the storm-water drains along the entire stretch has helped reduce water logging problems in these areas.

Dilip Kawatkhar, Joint Project Director, MMRDA said, "We widened nearly 4.5 km of the storm-water drains along BKC which helped in proper flow of water." Earlier the drains were just two metres but now the drains have been widened by nearly three metres.

MMRDA spent Rs 30 crore in widening the drains and constructing the roads at BKC.

They also connected 32 culverts on LBS road that would lead the water flowing on the roads directly to the Mithi River.

Vilas Tondwalkar, Project Director, Mithi River Development Authority, said, "We managed to remove nearly 12 lakh cubic metre of silt from these areas and widened the river bank by nearly 300 metres."
