Sudhir Naik | DR HD Kanga Cricket League is a bowlers' tournament but Wasim Jaffer's club coach Sudhir Naik believes it would be an ideal platform for India's Test discard to get his confidence back.
"Kanga League is one of his (Jaffer) favourite tournaments. Whenever he is in the city he ensures he participates. He will definitely look forward to gain some confidence from it. Anything above 50 runs will get him in the groove," National Cricket Club coach, Naik told MiD DAY yesterday.
Final nail
Jaffer was expected to fire against the Proteas at home after failing miserably against Australia (49 runs in six innings). But scoring 126 runs in five innings in the series resulted in him getting the boot.
Jaffer was dropped for the Sri Lanka Test series which begins on July 23. "The decision is sad because he is our specialist opener. But I expected it after he failed in Australia. And with Gautam Gambhir in great form, Jaffer was likely to be axed," he said.
Clueless
Known for his elegant stroke-play and sweet timing, the right-hander looked completely clueless against Brett Lee and Co on pacer friendly wickets Down Under. "I had high hopes for him. But I think he was pretty low on confidence. He just couldn't click after failing in the first Test. In fact I spoke to him after the first Test and told him to play on the front foot. I told him to hit straight back to the bowler. But he was too defensive," said Naik.
But Jaffer's guru feels his ward will soon make a comeback. "Jaffer knows what he has to do now. He will have to score big in the domestic matches. That is the only way he can comeback.
"He has done it in past and he will do it again. He is a fighter."
