After the success of No Honking Day on April 7, the Traffic Police are now planning to approach school principals to inculcate anti-honking sensibilities into children.
Keen on catching them young, Sanjay Barve, Jt CP (Traffic) said, "We are approaching both BMC and private school principals and will give the kids a sticker that says 'Dad, Please Don't Honk'. We will also tell students about the disadvantages of honking through a short film." The training will be given to children from Std V onwards.
Barve also added their main aim is to make Mumbai free of noise pollution. "Awareness among children and eventually their parents will be beneficial. We can drive without honking, but it has become a habit now," said Barve.
Traffic police are especially targeting schools where most students come by their own vehicle. M P Sharma, director of G D Somani School at Cuffe Parade, said, "We will meet Traffic Police officials next week. We already have a traffic training session every Friday."
Abha Dharampal, principal of Utpal Shanghvi School, Juhu, has not received any circular yet, but is very happy about the initiative. "It's high time we do something good for our city. Most parents are bound to accept what their kids say."
However, Abasaheb Jadhav, BMC's education officer, has not yet received any information about this plan. "Students of our schools come by bus," he said.
No Honking Day was organised on April 7. More than 37,000 motorists were fined for unnecessary honking and almost 2,000 horns for reversing cars have been nullified till date.
