A six-year-old falls into a open 18-feet-deep sewage hole and dies from suffocation at Sector 44 in Gurgaon on Thursday.

"Karan had gone for toilet near the main line sewage chamber where he slipped and fell into the hole," the police said.

Karan's mother Sangeeta got suspicious when her son did not turn up. Initially, Sangeeta thought that Karan would be playing around but when he did not come in two hours, she got restless. She cried for help.

Passerby helps

A passerby Naresh on hearing her crying for help, alerted the authorities. "I was passing by this road where I heard a woman crying for help for her son, who fell in a sewage hole that was open."

"Finding no sign of Karan inside the sewage, I immediately called up police for help. The police, then, sent a rescue team," Naresh told MiD DAY.

The police and fire department officials arrived at the spot at around 5:30 pm. "It took around two hours to locate him. Finally we found his body," H C Sihag, a fire officer of Sector 29 said.

Sihag also said that the main line chamber was not covered.
