Police officials said that Sher Bahadur Singh, who was working with The Statesman newspaper, was consuming alcohol with two other persons, identified as Dhanwant and Manukalika Singh in the underground parking lot of the building.
"Singh had an altercation with the two following which Dhanwant fired three shots from a country made pistol. Two shots pierced the Bahadur's body while third hit the wall.
The motive however, behind the murder is still not clear as they all were drunk," said a senior police officer.
After the incident, the accused went upstairs and aimed the pistol at two others Subhash and Himanshu, who also work in the same building. After some time, Dhanwant returned back to the same BB2 parking level. By the time police team arrived and he was detained, a cop said.
Accused detained
"We immediately rushed to the spot and detained the accused, Dhanwant from the basement. Another person has also been detained. Meanwhile, Singh's body was sent to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for post mortem and his relatives have been informed about the incident," stated the senior police officer.
The accused had come to the building along with Manukalika Singh, a relative of Bahadur, who is working as a peon in the office.
Personal enmity
"From initial investigation, it seems to be a case of personal enmity as the accused was carrying a revolver. We are probing the case from all possible angles," said a senior police officer.
General manager of the newspaper Shivaji Samadar said, "One of our driver had been shot dead by someone in basement parking. The police was informed soon after the incident."
Bahadur, a resident of Khoda Colony was working as a driver with the newspaper for the past 17 years.
Singh is survived by two daughters and wife. "We came to know about the incident from the police and immediately rushed to the spot," said Anil, a neighbour of Bahadur.
Deputy Commissioner, New Delhi, Anand Mohan said, "We got a call at around 10 pm. The dead body was recovered from the basement parking of the Statesman House. Two people have been detained in this connection. Further investigation is going on."
