Fighting for freedom: Shaukat Ali Hashmi with his wife Inshallah |
Inshallah was admitted to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after she complained of pain in her leg. But after 12 days of treatment, she was discharged without being cured.
The hospital has given out a bill for Rs 89,516 including the 10 per cent discount for freedom fighters, which the government would pay.
Above all, when Shaukat complained he was told that Inshallah would have to be shifted to the neurosurgery department, for which they would charged separately.
"The Delhi Government provides for Rs 1 lakh per annum under the direct billing scheme for medical expenses of city-based freedom fighters. The hospital has charged almost the full limit without giving proper treatment.
Now, we have no money for pursuing further treatment of my wife," said Hashmi, who survives on the monthly pension from Delhi and union governments.
"My wife had complained of pain in her leg. So we consulted the orthopaedician at the Ganga Ram hospital. On the advice of the doctor, we admitted her on July 10.
But after 12 days of treatment, the hospital said it was a case of neurosurgery and the patient would have to take re-admission in that department," Hashmi, who resides in the walled city told MiD DAY.
Inshallah was suffering from diabetic neuropathy that causes nerve damage. "It was a case of neuro department, but the patient was admitted in ortho department.
The doctors have inserted wire in artery assuming that there was a clout, which is preventing the blood circulation in the lower part of the body.
But it has damaged the urine control nerve of the patient, as a result she is unable to control her urine," said Dr Sanjay Dhingra, family doctor of the Hashmi family said.
Doctors at the hospital discharged Inshallah on Tuesday, saying the patient need to take re-admission for further treatment.
"I took personal attention of the patient. I helped the patient in getting the bed on priority.
Freedom fighter's wife's pain remains
"The patient had several problems. We have given her special treatment. At this age, total cure is not possible," said Dr S P Mandal, who was treating the patient at Ganga Ram Hospital.
"Doctors of neuro department have also visited the patient. But the family of the patient wanted some break. If there is any such concern, I will not hesitate to see the case again," Dr Mandal said.
"The hospital has left my mother in the lurch with diversified diagnosis. Dr Manish of neuro department assured us that my mother will get well after a surgical operation, but for that we have to admit the patient in neuro department," Nasir, son of Hashmi, said.
