Residents of Akshay building in Girgaum, who experienced mild tremors last night,
due to the earthquake in Satara, said their building managed to survive the quake, but might not do so again.

An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook parts of the city and state at 12.41 am.

Residents said the quake shook the building, which is in a dilapidated state. Said Vijay Potdar, who lives on the fifth floor, "My wife felt the tremors and woke me up. For a second, we thought the building might just crumble down."

Another resident Hemant Karekar said, "The condition of the building has deteriorated this monsoon and now the tremor has widened the cracks in my flat."

Karekar claimed that, as per court orders, MHADA has to maintain the building. "But officials have not yet taken the necessary steps," he added.

"Some parts of Mumbai, Pune and few other places in the state felt the tremors," said J B Lone, senior observer at the MET department's Mumbai office.

The epicentre was near Koyna dam in Satara. No casualties were reported.
