The tussle for FYJC admission continues. Although reports state there are more than 11,000 FYJC seats up for grabs, these seats are available only in lesser-known colleges.

Seats for the commerce and science streams in all top colleges of the city are full. If you are lucky, your child may manage to secure a seat in the arts faculty. Top colleges like KC, HR, Jaihind and Sydenham have no seats available. Colleges like Mithibai in Vile Parle, R D National College in Bandra and Bhavan's College at Andheri and Chowpatty have few seats available, but only in arts.

This means students, who have yet to secure admission, can only try their luck at some of the not-so-famous colleges in the city. Some of these colleges are Nirmal Junior College (144 seats in science), Prakash Junior College in Kandivli (190 seats in science), Dr Ambedkar Commerce Junior College in Parel (293 seats in commerce) and Malini Kishore Sanghavi Junior College in Vile Parle (97 seats in commerce).

Parents and principals are aghast that students are not getting seats on the basis of merit. They wonder whether students should opt for the arts stream in a top college or choose between an unknown and a night college for other streams.

On merit

Perin Bagli, principal of Activity High School (ICSE) at Peddar Road, said, "The admissions should have been on merit basis, but students who have scored around 80 per cent continue to suffer."

A student from St Anne's School at Fort, who scored 71 per cent in the Board exams, said, "I failed to get admission in arts at Jaihind College by just one and a half per cent. I have now secured admission in one of the lesser-known colleges for commerce at Charni Road. I hope to score well and change my stream next year."
