Vyom Kapoor (above) witnessed Ishmeet Singh drown at a Maldives resort on Tuesday |
"Ishmeet had asked me to join him in the deeper end of the pool but I refused. After a while Ishmeet was waving for help and I thought he was joking. It was after he disappeared that I called for help," Vyom said in a statement to the Indian High Commission in Maldives.
"On July 29, two contestants - a 16-year-old girl and Vyom Kapoor - went for a swim with Ishmeet at 4.30 pm. That's when the incident took place. The resort staff pulled Ishmeet out and tried to resuscitate him, but he was already dead. He was rushed to the hospital were they confirmed him dead on arrival," informed Narayan Swami, first secretary, Indian High Commission, Maldives.
Malan Robert, assistant manager, Chaaya Island Dhonveli resort where Ishmeet was staying, said, "When Ishmeet's friends called for help, Dr Ahmed, our resident doctor, jumped in to save him. But he was already dead.
"That end of the pool is 2.3 metres deep and the pool is asymmetrical in shape. We have one lifeguard and two pool attendants," Robert informed. He, however, refused to speak when he was questioned about the whereabouts of the lifeguards at the time of the incident.
The Voice of Maldives event has been postponed
Ishmeet is expected to be cremated in Ludhiana today.
Voices
A 19-year-old just slipping into a pool and dying is unbelievable. We just recorded one song together - Dhol Bajgaya, which will be released soon. Unfortunately, it will be the last song Ishmeet sang for an album.
Lalit, music composer
It is a sad incident. He was a nice boy. He was levelheaded, good natured and sincere. I don't know why God took him away so soon.
Jatin, music composer
Certain media persons questioned whether Ishmeet was drunk, but I strongly believe he wasn't. The organisers and the 26 participants of the event were shocked when they heard about the accident.
